Sultanahmet in a nutshell

Sultanahmet is the district on Istanbul's historic peninsula that holds the square of the same name. Hagia Sophia stands at the Sultanahmet square, at Ayasofya Meydanı No:1 in Fatih. Hagia Sophia is part of the Historic Areas of Istanbul, which UNESCO inscribed in 1985. This guide is independent. It is not run by a mosque, a museum or a public body.

The area is compact, and the main sights sit within a short walk or a tram ride of each other. Most visitors combine Hagia Sophia with the Blue Mosque across the square, the Basilica Cistern and Topkapı Palace. Plan a full day if you want to see more than two of them.

How to get to Sultanahmet

The tram is the simplest way. Check the operator for any special notices on the day.

T1 tram

Take line T1 from Kabataş to Bağcılar and get off at Sultanahmet. The same line stops at Karaköy, Eminönü, Sirkeci, Gülhane and Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı. The line runs daily from 06:00 to 00:00, with a gap of about 2 minutes at peak times.

From Taksim

Take the F1 funicular down to Kabataş, then change to the T1 for Sultanahmet. The 65 minutes quoted by the operator are for the whole T1 line in one direction, not for this trip.

From Sirkeci or Eminönü

Sirkeci connects to the Marmaray line and Eminönü to the ferries. Both are also T1 stops, so you can change to the tram there.

Do not mix up Topkapı

The T1 stop called Topkapı is not the stop at Topkapı Palace. For the palace, get off at Sultanahmet or Gülhane.

Trams and stations have low floors and ramps, according to the operator. That does not tell you how accessible the Hagia Sophia gallery is, so ask before you go if you need step-free access. Current fares and airport connections change, so look them up before your trip.

What to see around Hagia Sophia

Hagia Sophia

The visitor area costs €25 in 2026, with the same price for Turkish and foreign visitors. Children under 8 enter free and need ID at the turnstiles. The building is a working mosque, so tourists follow a separate gallery route and the lower floor is not offered to them. Restoration of the dome and the eastern half dome was still reported in September 2026, so do not count on an unobstructed view up. See tickets and opening hours.

History and Experience Museum

This is a separate museum in another building, at At Meydanı Sokak No:10 in Binbirdirek. Its ticket is €25 and does not give you access to the mosque interior. More on the museum page.

Topkapı Palace

The palace is closed on Tuesdays. The combined ticket for foreign visitors covers the palace, the Harem and Hagia Irene and costs TRY 2,750 in 2026. Do not add the Harem on top of that price. Details on the Topkapı page.

Basilica Cistern

The cistern holds two Medusa heads that were reused as column bases, one upside down and one on its side. It changed operator in 2026, so confirm tickets and evening visits before you go. See the cistern guide.

The Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar

The Blue Mosque faces Hagia Sophia across the square. The Grand Bazaar is a tram ride away at Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı. Both have their own guides on sister sites.
